The Natural Lip

The lips define the lower part of an individuals face. Full lips with an accentuated border have often been associated with beauty and youth. As we age the fullness of our lips decreases because of loss of the chemical known as hyaluronic acid resulting in a narrower and flatter lip. At myskindesign we perform lip-filling injections called lip augmentation or lip fillers.

We actually replace the same component that gives natural lips their fullness, which is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid preparations come in a number of different brands for lip fillers or lip augmentation. We use the most popular, well-studied preparations which are fillers by Restylane or Juvederm. These products are FDA approved and have an excellent side effect profile.

The reactions that were previously reported with permanent distortion and swelling as a consequence of using collagen and other semi-permanent fillers are not seen with the temporary fillers that we use.  With lip fillers the results are subtle, yet very impressive helping to restore your ‘pout’ .They and can also reduce the fine lines and wrinkles above the top lip, often referred to as “smoker’s lines.” The effects of lip fillers can last anywhere between 6-9 months.

How are lip filler/ lip augmentation procedures performed?

All lip augmentation / lip filler procedures are performed in safe clinical environments Local anaesthetic cream is applied to the lips and left on for at least thirty minutes. After the cream is removed the area is sterilised and the lip filler procedure begins. Small amounts of lip filler are placed delicately in layers in different parts of the lip to create the right definition. The lip filler also contains local anaesthetic to further numb the area.

What to expect after the lip filler/ lip augmentation procedure has been performed?

After effects from lip fillers vary from person to person. However expect the area to become swollen and discoloured by the evening of the  procedure and this will last 24 hours (till the next evening) and the swelling has usually settled within 48 hours of the lip filler procedure.
