Chemical peels are used to:

There are some important considerations you need to contemplate before having a chemical peel:

1. Is a chemical peel right for me?

Chemical peels are great for most people, whether it’s a few wrinkles you’d like to smooth out or acne scars you’re self conscious about. Chemical peels are ideal for those with fair skin but people with dark skin may experience some discolouration depending on the type of problem being treated.

2. What kind of peel do I need?

Chemical peels come in various strengths – superficial, medium and deep – and you must never opt for a chemical peel that is too strong. If you’re concerned then simply start with the lightest option as you can always go for a stronger one next time. As cooks may say; you can always add but you can’t take away.

It’s best to get a chemical peel every four to six weeks, but if you suffer from acne there are some gentle peels you can have every two weeks until you get the results you want.

3. What preparation must I do, and is there anything I need to do after?

To prepare, you may need to take supplementary tablets such as Retin-A, Renova, or glycolic acid to help protect your skin. Once you’ve had your chemical peel you must stay away from direct sunlight and make sure you don’t have a holiday in a hot country for at least six week after.

If you’re having a deep peel, it may be worth staying hidden away for a couple of days as your skin could become red and a little swollen. Don’t worry though; it’ll all be worth it once the redness has gone!

4. Where should I get my chemical peel done?

Importantly, your chemical peel should only be administered by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Currently there aren’t any statutory qualifications required to administer a chemical peel so it can be risky. They should have at least a relevant degree and ideally be a Member of the British Association of Dermatologists/Plastic surgeons.

Strawberries: Berry Good For Your Skin

Strawberries are good for your skin!

Strawberries have a tendency to taste even more delicious whilst watching Wimbledon Tennis in the sunshine.

As well as being delicious, they have incredible health benefits that include working miracles on your skin.

Whether you’re eating strawberries or using them directly on your face, here’s a lowdown of the top 5 reasons to stock up on them this summer:

1. Skin Repair and Acne Benefits
Strawberries contain some really beneficial acids including folic acid and salicyclic acid. Both can be found in abundance in strawberries (and raspberries for that matter). Folic acid actively encourages cell renewal and repair, which is perfect for suffering or aging skin. Plus, salicyclic acid is a widely known product used in anti-acne treatments. Spot on!

2. UV Protection
Like tomatoes, strawberries contain loads of antioxidants so eating them is a great way to protect your insides and outsides from free-radicals which are exacerbated by UV. Eat plenty of strawberries and give yourself a mini strawberry facial to give yourself the best protection. Plus, always use sunscreen to keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay!

3. Anti-Ageing

Simple Strawberry Toner:
Mash up 2 large strawberries in a small bowl and sieve the juice into 30ml of water, plus half a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Using cotton wool gently spread this over your face. Leave for 8-10 minutes and rinse off with warm water. You can keep this water in a small bottle for up to 5 days and store in the fridge.

Strawberry Facemask:
Mash up strawberries, add a little raw honey and a teaspoon of live yoghurt and spread on your skin as a mask. Leave for 10-15 minutes before washing off with clean water and patting your skin dry. You can also use this as a scrub by massaging into your skin using circular movements. Another great feature of this mask – it’s not just edible but delicious too!

As well as staying young, it’s important to stay looking healthy, so a facial massage should be an essential part of your beauty routine.

Why is facial massaging so effective in keeping your healthy glow?

Blood flow

Just as you massage aching joints after a long run to help repair your muscles, massaging your face encourages skin cells to rejuvenate. Massage stimulates blood flow, which is vital for keeping your skin lively and fresh.

And relax…

Release the tensions in your forehead and around your mouth by massaging out those tiny knots. This will also relax your skin, helping lines and shallow wrinkles almost disappear.

Give your skin a drink

When massaging your face masseurs often use a baby oil base which is kind to your skin. At home you can use a natural oil such as cold pressed extra virgin olive oil or even just sunflower oil to nourish and hydrate your skin.

DIY facial massage

If only we all had the budget for a bi-weekly facial massage (or even a full body one!). Facial massage is something that can very easily be done from the comfort of your own home.

First thing’s first: wash your hands. Your hands harbour bacteria, which you don’t want near your face.

Use gentle oil for your skin, and as I have mentioned you can find this in your kitchen. You may be put off by the smell of these basic oils and you can use essential oils to jazz it up a bit, but be careful not to use floral or citrus oils if you have sensitive skin.

Take a little oil in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together, warming the oil and covering your hands. Then start massaging:

1. Begin at the centre of your face on either side of the bridge of your nose, and move outwards and upwards using smooth curved movements, using either your fingers or your knuckles.

2. Return to your chin and with long strokes move upwards along the line of your jaw toward your cheek bones

3. With the flat of your palm or the heel of your palm use short upwards strokes from the centre of your forehead. Gradually move outwards along your eyebrows, continuing with the lifting movement.

There is a lot of discussion around what kind of movements you should make, between vertical, curved or circular strokes. Essentially you, just work with whatever makes you feel good.

You can focus on different parts of your face and potential ‘problem areas’ if you need to. Primarily ensure that most of your massage is moving up your face, rather than further encouraging the disparaging effects of gravity by dragging your face down and encouraging wrinkles.

You can sleep with leftover oil on your face over night for an intensive moisture boost, or simply wash off with warm water before patting your face dry.
