Many people heard the term “chemical peel” but they don’t know what it entails and how it works? They don’t realise that there are various kinds of peels including some brand-new peels that are great for improving the skin appearance.

Types of Chemical Peel?

Lactic Peel

  • Contains the popular alpha hydroxy acids
  • Powerful ingredient which helps to reduce acne breakouts and appearance of wrinkles and signs of ageing
  • Derived from the milk
  • Ideal for sensitive or dry skin
  • It has active ingredients such as retinol
  • If concerned about having an adverse reaction, then this peel looks easier on skin

  • Eliminates brown spots
  • Supports healthy collagen levels for firmer skin

Glycolic Peel

  • It is a medium grade chemical peel – It targets the skin’s epidermis rather than penetrating down to deeper layers
  • The peels must be administered by an aesthetician or dermatologist
  • It rejuvenates the skin and fights aging
  • It improves acne by removing dirty layers, bacteria, dead skin cells
  • To shrink pores and improve overall skin tone
  • If used properly you will see positive results for several months

Beta Peel

  • You can quickly achieve substantial improvement in uneven pigmentation
  • It reduces acne scars and enlarged pores

Who can use chemical peels?

Usually, light-haired and fair-skinned patients are the ones who can use any chemical peel. Darker skinned people can also get good results, but it depends upon the type of problem they are trying to combat.

Before taking chemical peel inform your clinician if you have any scarring, cold sores, or facial X-rays in your history.

What to expect after a chemical peel?

This is very much depending upon the type of peel you have, a reaction such as sunburn may occur. Peeling usually, involves redness then followed by scaling, but this should disappear within 3 to 7 days.

Mild peels can be repeated at 1 to 4-week intervals until you get the look you are after.

You will need to avoid the sun for some days after a chemical peel since your new skin will be fragile.

Conclusion

Chemical peel is very popular because it offers immediate results and is performed as an outpatient procedure.

There are some important considerations you need to contemplate before having a chemical peel:

1. Is a chemical peel right for me?

Chemical peels are great for most people, whether it’s a few wrinkles you’d like to smooth out or acne scars you’re self conscious about. Chemical peels are ideal for those with fair skin but people with dark skin may experience some discolouration depending on the type of problem being treated.

2. What kind of peel do I need?

Chemical peels come in various strengths – superficial, medium and deep – and you must never opt for a chemical peel that is too strong. If you’re concerned then simply start with the lightest option as you can always go for a stronger one next time. As cooks may say; you can always add but you can’t take away.

It’s best to get a chemical peel every four to six weeks, but if you suffer from acne there are some gentle peels you can have every two weeks until you get the results you want.

3. What preparation must I do, and is there anything I need to do after?

To prepare, you may need to take supplementary tablets such as Retin-A, Renova, or glycolic acid to help protect your skin. Once you’ve had your chemical peel you must stay away from direct sunlight and make sure you don’t have a holiday in a hot country for at least six week after.

If you’re having a deep peel, it may be worth staying hidden away for a couple of days as your skin could become red and a little swollen. Don’t worry though; it’ll all be worth it once the redness has gone!

4. Where should I get my chemical peel done?

Importantly, your chemical peel should only be administered by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Currently there aren’t any statutory qualifications required to administer a chemical peel so it can be risky. They should have at least a relevant degree and ideally be a Member of the British Association of Dermatologists/Plastic surgeons.

Here at myskindesign we are qualified and long-time members of the British Association of Dermatologists and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons so rest assured, you’re in safe hands.
